I began the trials last Monday and I will complete them this coming Monday. I thought it might be good to have a thread where those who have experienced this new form of testing can share what the experience was like.
I have worked with Kevin for many years now, so facing a test administered by him has become about as comfortable for me as any such experience could be. The nervousness I experience is mostly self-imposed, because I put allot of pressure on myself to do well.
I faced the trial alone so I had to move from one drill to the next with just enough time to catch my breath in between. I would recommend that any of you planning to take the trials try and schedule them with at least one other person. You will be better off if you can pace yourself by resting for the set your partner does, and they can rest during yours.
The speed drills felt good and I was pleased by the outcome. During the crossing minds exercise I started breathing hard. I had to catch my breath after both coordination drills were finished. I thought at this point the balance drills would be difficult, but I had trained them enough that I surprised myself by the out come. Next came the push ups. I was determined to do well on these and I was already pretty tired. Most of the work happened in the first 30 seconds. I did my last full push up 12 seconds before the minute was finished. I kept straining but I couldn't get my arms to go straight, so I just held that position, arms bent but not yet down, until Kevin called time. I didn't do as well on the sit-ups as I hoped to do. I trained them several times during every week in preparation but after everything else, I just couldn't perform as well as I wanted to. After the sit ups I needed a substantial break. My ears were ringing, my nose was tingling, my vision was blurry and I felt sick to my stomach. I managed to pull it together without passing out. We finished with the lock out endurance drills. The whole process with breaks included took less than an hour.
I was very pleased over all with my performance. I would advise you all to steadily train the drills: speed back fist and roundhouse, crossing minds and Bruce Lee coordination drill, 4 kicking combination, and the roundhouse-wheel kick combination balance drill, train your push ups and your sit ups, and stick your leg in the air and keep it there as long as you can, to the side and to the front! TRAIN TRAIN and TRAIN, because this form of physical testing is where the Elite fighting system is going to be set apart from other martial arts. I was sore the next day, but by the day after that I was right back to running and weightlifting and TRAINING for this next Monday when I will do all the rest of the trial.
Be sure to eat well the day before you test and the day of. For those of you testing in the Louisville area with Kevin, I recommend, and I know Warrior-scholar will agree, go to Smoothie King on Bardstown Rd and get you a Muscle punch about three hours before your test starts :D Tell them Sam, from the Doo Wop shop, sent you. They will hook you up! :p
