At 5:30 PM on December 12, 2003, my partner and I apprehended two suspects. This apprehension impressed in my mind the importance of multiple attack strategies and the awareness of edged weapon defenses.

As we approached the suspects, we utilized the Parity Flank Attack (refer to Advanced Combat Tactics in the Enforcer Level Training Reference Manual). My partner issued verbal commands as I approached the suspects? flank. I noticed a suspicious movement from Suspect A. He turned quickly to the side and dropped his right arm near his pocket. Believing the suspect might be reaching for a weapon, I moved to the suspect?s Zone of Vulnerability and prepared to initiate a pre-emptive attack. After safely apprehending the suspects we searched the suspects and found the weapon pictured below in the pocket of Suspect A. It is an improvised weapon constructed from a broken comb and a razor blade. It is designed to fit beneath the index finger and deliver devastation cuts to the hands and neck.

These weapons are very common in prisons and in countries with strict gun laws. Great Britain, a country with one of the strictest gun laws, has seen an increase of attacks involving bladed weapons.

It shows that laws alone do not deter crime. A criminal will find a weapon (legal or otherwise) to inflict harm on others.

I was made more aware of this type of threat due to the supplementary training program I am currently completing. Scheduled for release in February 2004, this program covers the use of self defense knives against edge weaponry. I am very excited about this program as it will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone.

Until then,
Be Careful, Stay Focused, and Keep Training.
