TRAINING FOR FOOTWORK

Smooth, fast footwork is a matter of correct body weight and foot placement. Examine your footwork for:

1. Body feel and control. Develop good economical motions and stay well-balanced during movement.

2. Attack and defense capability at all times. Even while moving you should maintain a position that allows you to attack at a split second’s notice, or defend immediately.

3. Ease and comfort of movement in every direction.

We have worked on several drills to enhance the economy and balance of our footwork. These drills have definitely made a big difference! Can you perhaps suggest some exercises aside from specific these drills (i.e. shuttle drills for dexterity) that might help aid our training in this area. Perhaps the aforementioned drills are all we really need to focus on. Just wondering...

One particular drill I have always enjoyed is a sparring drill in which I cannot use my hands. I place them behind my back or in my pockets. My partner and I will spar for three minutes. I have only my foot maneuvers and body evasions for defense. You will learn more in these three minutes than any book can fill!
