Developing Power in your Punches

In order to gain maximum efficiency in a punch, there are certain principles that should be understood and followed:

1. Powering in striking comes from the realization that your arms are merely extensions of your body. When you hit an opponent, don’t just hit him with your arm, hit him with your entire body.

2. Power comes from the dynamic torquing of the waist and trunk around an imaginary axis (Central Axis). Synchronize your foot, knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow in all of your punches.

3. Avoid having any “get set” posture or preparatory movements prior to delivering any punch or kick. You should always be at the ready.

4. All of your punches begin and end in the ready position. Your punching arm should return to its original position along the same path or plane after landing.

5. In all punches combined with footwork; the hand should always move first. Never present a target before your weapon.

6. Your punching hand should be tight only when the fist lands. Keeping your fist tight all the time tenses your forearm and slows your punches.

7. Your punches should accelerate and aim through the target. Don’t just hit the opponent, hit through him.

8. Your guarding hand should be in a position that allows you to defend while your attack lands, and then effectively continue the attack.
