View Full Version : Instructor Series

I took an idea from the instructor series and started working with the concept the last couple of months. One problem "weak kenpo" has is the ability to deal with wrestling type moves. "Strong Kenpo" is full of great stuff that works.

The "circles of motion" Kevin Lamkin demonstrates on one of the instructor series videos has been cross bred (no pun intended to my last name) with wrestling's pommelling drill. This is an essential skill in blending anti-wrestling skills with striking skills.

It also helps to create anchoring strikes (strikes that slip from caught positions into high-pressure motion when they slip from their anchoring) [anyone know the Kenpo term for this?]

This drill went over in class very well, as much of the competition tries to work on student's weaknesses in competition, and this circle of motion "under pressure" drill seems to help fill in the gaps.

Once again thanks for all the ideas, concepts and principles over the years.

I would love to see a short video clip of this if you have one. I am not quite sure what you might be referring to. Perhaps you could give a more detailed description of one instance. I don't want to presume incorrectly.

I put a short video clip from the other night on YouTube. I took a couple of interested students and taught it to them.

Remember, they just learned it the day before the video was shot. Also note that the "little" guy is 5'8" and 140lbs, the other two guys are much larger ;)

Note: I make alot of videos as students learn, it helps you realize the development. It has been my experience that videos are often shot when only the best are at work. To coach people is to look at the whole spectrum.

Note2: We were having too many instances of "UFC wannabe's" rushing in and successfully taking students down. Part of the problem was students were unable to deal with the timely-ness and accuracy of motion they needed to work. This drill would allow a student to deal with the sudden pressure and come out with a devistating strike AND deal with the attempt rather quickly. I see some results immediately with the drill.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you so much for the video Lance.
I also film my students often for their benefit.

When I directed a few of my students to the clip they immediately wanted to work in a technique like Glancing Wing or Destructive Twins. Hopefully I can prod a few of them to respond to this thread.

Thanks for the comment.

I will be posting up a more advanced version that includes some footwork. There has been quite a positive response to the videos posted on YouTube.

Odd fact: I seem only to wear my Kenpo Uniform on video. I usually wear workout clothes, a coaching jacket accessorized with a whistle and a stopwatch.
