American Kenpo Research Council
Mission Statement
We are committed to preserving, perfecting and continuing the flame of American Kenpo Karate through educational and scientific research and training. We strive to preserve Kenpo?s past for future practitioners, perfect the present through our personal training and standardization of the Art, and advance the Art in the manner envisioned by past Kenpo Masters while maintaining unity and proficiency in the Art.
I.Membership
a.Types of Membership
i.There are two types of membership available for entry into the American Kenpo Research Council?General Council and Masters Council.
1.General Council membership is open to all practitioners of Kenpo regardless of rank or affiliation.
2.Masters Council membership is open to all practitioners of Kenpo regardless of rank IF they meet at least ONE of the following criteria:
a.A black belt for 15 years or longer
b.Hold the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt or higher in the Art of Kenpo
c.Owned or operated a school or club
d.Being of reputable character and having a strong desire to build upon the foundation laid by past Grandmasters
b.Application for Membership
i.Membership into the AKRC may be obtained by enrolling at the AKRC website located at www.american-kenpo-legacy.com (http://www.american-kenpo-legacy.com/) in the appropriate section.
ii.A one-time fee of $25.00 is required to cover production and operating costs of emblems, certificates, awards, and web-site maintenance.
II.Research Criteria
a.Submissions
i.All individual and group research must be approved by the Masters Council and uphold scientific and/or historical scrutiny before dissemination to the Kenpo Community.
ii.All submissions must adhere to the following criteria:
1.All facts and information must list the appropriate source so that it may be investigated by others, give proper credit to the original source, and prevent plagiarism.
2.All submissions must indicate whether the work, or parts of the work, are fact, theories, speculation, or opinion. The definitions of these terms are:
a.Fact?verifiable evidence of a truth. Acceptable written facts include recorded interviews, magazines, manuals, publications, etc. Oral information must be not be hearsay and must be verifiable by a least two separate independent sources before being accepted as fact.
b.Theories?conclusions drawn upon facts. The author/researcher must base his theory upon the facts presented in the research. If this theory upholds further research/testing and is accepted by the majority of the Masters Council, it may then be nominated for consideration to be included in the standardized curriculum.
c.Speculation?conclusions drawn upon a limited number of facts or inconclusive research. An insufficient number of facts may be the reason that the focus of the research is net met. These results may indicate that a different path of research should be undertaken or it may mean that a more in depth study is needed.
d.Opinion?personal views or preferences regarding a subject. Though opinions may or may not be based upon facts, they may be used as ideas for research, but are never accepted as conclusive proof.
3.Materials submitted for approval should be beneficial to the historical, tactical, scientific and philosophical body of the Kenpo Community.
4.Materials submitted must have copyright approval for submission to the website. Copying articles from other websites does not meet protocol standards. Articles from other websites may be copied for submission, provided that copyright permission is granted..
5.Matters of personal opinion may not necessarily meet the standards of A.K.R.C. protocols. Items of personal opinion are welcome to be posted on the Forum/Discussion Board.
6.Each item submitted will indicate who submitted the article and will also list any contact information that you wish to provide. There is no monetary compensation for providing materials to be submitted to the website. The materials submitted are for the enhancement of the body of the Kenpo Community.
III.Anonymity
a.Though the AKRC is non-biased and all-inclusive, we do recognize the fact that some contributing individuals may be unable or uncomfortable in revealing their identity in published research. Under such circumstances, upon the request of the individual, the member?s identity will remain confidential in all published works. A pseudonym may be used in lieu of the member?s actual name until such time that the member wishes to reveal his/her identity.
IV.Rank and Recognition
a.The AKRC recognizes the fact that its members come from various affiliations that have differing requirements and standards for advancement. Though the AKRC?s official curriculum is Ed Parker?s 24 System, the AKRC still recognizes an individual?s rank obtained through his/her original affiliation.
b.The AKRC researches and preserves Ed Parker?s American Kenpo Karate, but is not authorized to certify, issue or award rank in American Kenpo.
c.The AKRC will recognize a person?s contribution to the Art and issue certificates and awards appropriately.
V.Standard Curriculum
a.Ed Parker?s 24 System is the official standardized curriculum for the AKRC.
b.Members are encouraged, though not required, to follow and train in the 24 System.
c.The 24 System will be used as the ?control? system for all research.
d.As advancements are made in the Art, additions to the Official 24 System may be made if approved by a majority vote of the Council.
VI.Mission
a.The mission of the AKRC is threefold?Past, Present, and Future.
i.PAST?A detailed examination and understanding of the past is necessary to:
1.Comprehend and appreciate the development of the Kenpo System.
2.To understand the logic and thought processes behind its change and refinement.
3.To preserve its history for future generations.
4.To accurately document the history and development of Kenpo.
ii.PRESENT?Perfecting and maintaining one?s personal skill is the responsibility and priority of all members. It is the AKRC?s responsibility to maintain the integrity and standardization of Ed Parker?s American Kenpo System including all training and educational material and/or programs.
iii.FUTURE?It is the AKRC?s mission to continue the legacy of past Masters of Kenpo by perpetually refining the Art through logic and scientific research. As advances are made in the Art of Kenpo and the Martial Arts, it will then be Council?s duty determine if these new developments warrant consideration to be included in the standardized curriculum while maintaining the integrity of the Art.
VII.Responsibilities of the AKRC to the Kenpo Community
a.The research and development responsibilities of the AKRC to the Kenpo community include:
i.To develop and optimize methods of evaluating performance in martial skills training; creating scales for comparing the results of
performance in a standardized way, specifically mechanical units of measurement (physics units).
ii.To develop methodologies for valid scientific research into the martial skills training; help in creating experimental methods and data gathering methods for researchers to gain useful conclusions from their experiences.
iii.To put to the test assertions made in the martial arts community through valid and rigorous experimentation, taking into account physical, physiological and mental research literature.
iv.To create a library of resources for future reference for research
purposes and further development and evolution of martial skills
training through scientific experimentation and testing.
v.Publishing and disseminating the findings of the research through the world wide web, seminars and other forms of instructive communication.
