I am perplexed with how American Kenpo and how the 'Infinite Variations' of techniques can overcome the outcome of results of "Hick's Law". To me this is a great paradox.
Any thoughts?

Reaction time is the interval time between the presentation of a stimulus and the initiation of the muscular response to that stimulus. A primary factor effecting a response is the number of possible stimuli, each requiring their own response, that are presented.
Hick discovered that the reaction time increases proportionally to the number of possible responses until a point at which the response time remains constant despite the increases in possible responses (Hick's Law).
You can greatly reduce the number of possible responses by understanding the Family Groupings that attacks can come from. Also, pay attention to the fact that the response time reaches a constant. Training, is the key factor that you to reduce one area of reaction time. In total, there are three components of reaction time that will be discussed in a new DVD that we are releasing next month - The Physics Of Kenpo.
So, its not really a paradox at all. But it is a difference between armchair kenpo and actually training. Don't let these discussions distract you or discourage you from serious training.

Thanks for explaining "Hick's Law".
Lots of practice transfers responsibilities in your brain from the thinking (slow part) to the nervous system (fast part). Lots of practice and experience also reduces the amount of physical stress, emotional stress and intellectual stress (spiritual stress too) when an encounter happens.
Personally speaking, the more I practice the more efficient mentally, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually I become.
At some point a state of blending awareness and focus and noticable stress reduction started and this is where I became much more effective as a fighter.
That is not only are there technique efficiencies, but alot of soft skills that are brain and nervous system efficiencies that practice brings.

...a new DVD that we are releasing next month - The Physics Of Kenpo.
!!!
Now that's exciting! I'm looking forward to viewing the new dvd.
