Quite often, I have beginners ask me how fast is 'fast' in Kenpo. While the answer is often, "As fast as possible", the speed while interacting with an opponent is dependent on several variables that is learned through partner training, and time.

For general speed concepts we have conducted tests on numerous martial artists over the years to give a guideline for speed, endurance, etc.

Click on this link to go to the drills page: http://www.elite-fighters.com/training/praetorium/trials.htm

Follow the recommended routines and test yourself. You should use these as guidelines and realize that as a greater number of practitioners are tested, the numbers may change. Feel free to send your truthful results.

I was pleased to find this section on speed drills. I tried speed drill #1, the backfist and was able to complete 108 in 30 seconds. This lists the results as merely proficient, so I'll have to practice this one quite a bit.

Anyone else have any results to list or tips on increasing speed?

Keep training the speed drills. Be consistent and methodical like a track & field athlete. Sprinters have to train carefully to edge ahead. Your backfist is a speed strike, (like a sprinter). Consistent training will make changes to you at the cellular level.
